About Together Strong

Together Strong is a mobile and online app that uses virtual humans and gaming technology to help veterans and service members learn what to say and do when a buddy is struggling with adjustment to civilian life.

The program is based on extensive research in neuroscience, social cognition, and psychology. Service members and veterans also gave extensive input during program development, making the conversations highly realistic.

The ultimate goal is to help the peer build resilience and the motivation to access help. To get there, the user needs to decide how to navigate a series of conversations with characters facing a range of challenges from employment and family dynamics to mental health. The program offers an engaging, game-like experience as users try out different approaches and receive personalized feedback, tips, and opportunities for additional practice.

Together Strong is built on a conversational approach that has been proven effective by dozens of research studies. It focuses on empathy, trust, and collaboration.

Together Strong is:

  • Easy to access. You can download it to your mobile device and use it anywhere or use the online version anywhere there is internet access.
  • Interactive. It's hands-on and works like a game, giving you immediate feedback.
  • Self-paced. You can practice as much as you want, wherever you want.
  • Practice-based. You will be ready for that important conversation that could make a difference in someone's life.

Together Strong builds on the success of Kognito's Family of Heroes, which was designed for military families. A randomized controlled study found a 46 percent increase in the number of military family members who spoke with their veterans about getting support after they had completed the program. Compared to the control group, twice as many veterans (22% vs. 11%) of those approached by their family actually followed through and sought help.
